Christmas in Manchester is a special place all year round but during the Christmas season, there is something extra special in the air. The streets light up with thousands of twinkling fairy lights, the shoppers are busy trying to find that ideal gift for their loved one and the street are filled with Christmas carols. If you want to experience the sights and sounds of Christmas in Manchester, take a look at our handy guide below:

Christmas Market

While they shouldn’t be the main focus of the day, presents are a HUGE part of Christmas. This year, instead of buying that same old scarf for Mum or socks for Dad, visit one of Manchester’s bustling Christmas markets and find a one of a kind gift that they will really cherish. There are 9 main markets around the city with a whopping 400+ stalls in total. Lose yourself among the lights and carols from 7th November, all the way to 22/23rd December and don’t forget to treat yourself to a mulled wine to warm yourself up while you shop.

Ice Skating

A lot of the Christmas markets are accompanied by world-class ice skating rinks and funfairs to sweeten the deal! The Ice Rink at Ice Village in Cathedral Gardens is a new addition and is a fantastic day out for all of the family. When you’ve mastered the skates, visit Santa’s Grotto, enjoy arctic games and visit the Arctic Bar for some delicious hot chocolate to warm you up again. Skating is fun for all ages and all skill levels and will give you lasting (and hilarious!) memories.

Carol Services

If you prefer to celebrate the holidays in a more traditional way, the city is full of the sounds of our favourite Christmas Carols, old and new. From lunch-time services to large-scale orchestral services, we have a little of everything. A lot of the services are used to raise money for much-needed charities like the Alzheimer’s Society, hospices and hospitals and offer a mulled wine and mince pie reception so you can really get into the Christmas mood. It would be a pity to miss some of Manchester’s finest vocal talent, so make sure to catch a carol service while you’re here.

NYE Celebrations

We all know that the Christmas celebrations don’t end on 25th, they carry on well into the new year. Whatever you are hoping for this New Year, Manchester has it. Each of the pub’s, clubs and venues in the city have their own unique celebrations for this special night so you will surely find something special to suit you. If you fancy something a little different to the usual pub countdown, head to Albert Square for the NYE fireworks display. If last years celebrations are any indication, the display will be a pyrotechnical spectacle!
